At first glance, the announcement reads like a familiar story: major commercial technology companies expanding their footprint in government systems. But the deeper significance is in what the DoD is trying to accomplish at the intersection of three pressures that have been intensifying over the past year. The first is performance: defense AI needs compute power that can handle training, fine-tuning, and inference at scale. The second is security: classified networks impose strict constraints on data handling, connectivity, and software supply chains.
