iOS 27 Could Let You Choose the AI Model Behind Apple Intelligence

Apple is reportedly preparing a major change to how “Apple Intelligence” works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac—one that could turn the AI experience from a single, tightly controlled system into something closer to a modular platform. Instead of Apple Intelligence being powered only by Apple’s own models and pipelines, new reporting suggests that iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 will allow users to select which AI model powers different parts of the experience. Even more notably, compatible third-party chatbots could be plugged in as “Extensions,” enabling them to drive not just Siri, but other Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Image Playground.

If this sounds like a small tweak, it isn’t. It would represent a shift in Apple’s approach to AI delivery: from “Apple builds the intelligence and you use it” to “Apple provides the interface and orchestration, while models can be swapped.” That kind of architecture matters because it changes what users can control, what developers can build, and how competition might play out inside Apple’s ecosystem.

To understand why this is significant, it helps to look at what Apple Intelligence currently does. Apple’s AI features are designed to feel native: they’re woven into writing, summarization, image generation, and voice interactions. They’re also designed to work with Apple’s privacy and on-device processing goals.
