The International Monetary Fund has issued a stark warning to policymakers and financial institutions: the next wave of AI models may not just change how businesses operate, but also how cyberattacks are launched, scaled, and monetised—potentially with consequences large enough to resemble a “systemic” shock.

In a message aimed at regulators and supervisors, the IMF argues that the rapid rollout of more capable AI systems is likely to reshape the threat landscape for financial-sector cybersecurity. The concern is not limited to the possibility of more frequent breaches. Attackers who can rapidly identify vulnerabilities, craft convincing social-engineering messages, probe systems at scale, and adapt their tactics in real time can shorten the window in which defenders detect and respond.
